It’s a railway romance happened so quietly, just like two lovers hold each other in arms under the moonlight in the open woodland, any sounds would seem superfluous, and what you can do is just to feel and be the moment.
The sounds

You might feel kind of boring, There were quite a few lines in the film if you compared to “Love before”trilogy” (another great love and travel story), but I feel the beauty of it, it’s not a beauty you commonly see around us, it’s a beauty in the corner. It’s like you are passing a seemingly ordinary painting in your daily commute, if you don’t stop and stand for a while to appreciate the details, you won’t find the meaning and beauty of it.  You will find in the film that all came so quietly that the sounds the train run over the trail, two train station employees played the table football and any other sounds are heard so clearly, whereas, in real life, we may never pay attention to such trivial voices. It’s another side of life – if you want to be heard or seen, do not pitch your voice high, but keep you surrounding quite, do not inflate yourself to be seen, but stand in front of blank background, because there is so much noise around us that prevent us from discovering love, truth, beauty and our own voice. I guess This’s the essence of purity and simplicity, yet everyone finds it’s just so hard at any time. One interesting scene: when the orchestra is playing, and two leads are dancing, even the sign language among deaf-mutes become annoying.

The love

Of course, it’s the beauty of pure love the film tried to tell. We don’t know who are the main characters, what they did before, what they do for living, how much money they have to spend, but is it matter in pure and true love? It all starts with a light and sweet smile of the girl when she heard the boy said “forwards” asked where is his final destination. They only communicate through eyes, enough though. For me, it seems like they have already exchanged thousands of thousands of words without saying them. At the beginning, it’s just a mutual attraction, like all other lovers, uncertainty is the biggest enemy, but all come to so sure when the boy knocked the window, the girl lifts her eyes see the man knowing he is there waiting for no one but her, isn’t wonderful? Ever since, the love blooms in the two young persons as the train swims among fields, hills, bridges, and villages. When it comes to love, people are not intelligent at all, they cannot explain love, and thus always attest it to coincidence, thinking love is something you only have when hit by lightning. Love is so simple, a light smile, a gentle help, an unexpected encounter, all define a kind of love and romance without glamourous scene and eye-catching boldness. When you peer off all the decorations of love, you will find true love. The story ends up with both working on the train.  They turn the travel into a way of life and love, full of coincidences.

The visual

One part I like very much is that the young man “dance” with the music so vibrant, and the camera resolve him round by round, up and down, it’s like a volcano eruption. You could say even inside a quiet man, there lives another energetic and furious and opposite himself.

Others

TheFontain Di Trevi part is also excellent, if you want to play romantic, you don’t have to be at Roman Fontain Di Trevi. It could be anywhere, as the young man did, full of imagination. There are several parts or symbols seems to represent some meaning or life philosophy which I cannot understand yet, and many bizarre characters, including a stowaway, a deaf-mute duo, a balloon-seller, a bird enthusiast, they add more fun into the movie, also like all kinds of people in the real world. Anyway, I love this movie very much, it’s quiet, simple, and pursuing true love without one more word. It is worth watching again and dig deeper what travel and love means.

Excuse my writing in English, you may see some typos and grammatical problems. Fix later.

From IMDb:

After his father’s death, a young man (Gregor Bakovic) uses the black mourning flag and sews himself a pair of trousers. He then takes a train trip and meets a variety of bizarre characters, including a stowaway, a deaf-mute duo, a balloon-seller, a bird enthusiast, and an attractive girl (Barbara Cerar). Their railway romance gets derailed, but a variety of sight gags and caboose comics keep the film on track and in locomotion.
